Professional Author Website Design: How It Can Help Grow Your Business

Project Overview

One Goat Publishing was a project that involved the development of an author website for a children’s book author and publisher to sell books online.

I worked closely with Dannielle to develop a website that met her business needs now and into the future. I used the WordPress platform to create a custom website that was easy for her to manage and update going forward.

The website includes a shop to sell books and resources online, templates for authors, book and blog pages, advanced shipping and discount features, and email marketing integration among others.

The resulting website is professional, easy to use and manage, and perfect for online book sales.

About the Author

Dannielle Pickford is a Children’s Author and Doctor of Physiotherapy. She loves to combine these two areas by helping inspire children to be their very best selves and try regardless of the possibility of failure.

She was inspired to start writing books to help her sons – her little boy has a developmental speech delay. In her books, she aims to tackle big and sometimes difficult conversations, give a step up to those who are falling behind, and let every child know they are perfect just the way they were made.

The Problem

Dannielle’s successful Kickstarter campaign meant it was time to build a website to sell her first book and accompanying resources. Like many small business owners, she tried to DIY her new publisher and author website using WordPress but found the steep learning curve overwhelming – even after purchasing a dedicated author website template.

“I was struggling to work out how to set up my website and make it look professional, as well as being able to add new content and manage it easily. I needed a website that would help me sell my books and resources online. After working with Kreete I now have a website that does all of that and more!”

Dani was also wondering how she could combine the publishing side of her business with an author’s website. There weren’t many good examples that she had come across and was struggling to make it work logically.

DANNIELLE SAYS..

“I was struggling to work out how to set up my website and make it look professional, as well as being able to add new content and manage it easily.

I needed a website that would help me sell my books and resources online. After working with Kreete I now have a website that does all of that and more!

Kreete is a website designer who I trust implicitly. She delivers on her promises, and more importantly, doesn’t overcharge for her services.

Overall, I am extremely happy with the final product and would recommend Kreete to anyone who is looking for a professional, user-friendly and efficient website. She has helped me with three website builds now, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.”

The Solution

I worked with Dani to understand her business needs and objectives for the website. She was on the right track, setting up a website inside WordPress, but just needed someone knowledgeable to step in and bring her vision around design and functionality to life.

Technical Solutions for the Author Website

I started the project by setting up a temporary domain to not disturb the existing connection with Kickstarter. This was followed by an audit of the existing setup, cleaning up and deactivating unnecessary plugins and themes.

I used the Astra Pro theme and Elementor Pro page builder to create a custom website that was easy for her to manage and update going forward.

An integration with Woocommerce and Stripe was added to handle the e-commerce functionality. I also implemented an automatic bulk discount feature that allows wholesalers to buy books in bulk with an automatic discount applied at checkout.

I set up advanced shipping rules that take into account the heavy weight of the books when sent overseas or in bigger quantities.

Design and Content

Dani had written content for her Kickstarter campaign. I took her documentation and turned it into website content, optimizing for SEO and the conversion process.

I set up easy-to-apply or duplicate templates for e-commerce pages, dedicated books, and author landing pages as well as products and blogs. This ensures Dani can recreate key pages as her publishing business grows and more books are added to the repertoire.

Email Marketing Integration

Dani was aware of the power of email and was keen to implement an email marketing integration to her website.

I set up a Mailerlite account and welcome email automation for Dani with a free lead magnet – a colouring-in page for kids to get more mums in her email list.

“I was struggling to understand how to set up my email marketing solution in a way it generated maximum benefit. I also wasn’t sure how to set up marketing automation to go with my lead magnet. Kreete was able to talk me through the process and set it all up for me!”

I was able to customise the email template to match One Goat Publishing branding perfectly. The automated email sequence is set up to send the welcome email immediately after someone opts into Dani’s list. I’m confident that this will help Dani grow her list quickly and efficiently.

SEO

Implementing basic SEO practices is a must when it comes to building your new website – and not an optional extra. Ranking inside search engines is usually a long-term process, but setting up for success is what is included in every website built with me. It was no different with One Goat Publishing.

I wrote and implemented SEO metadata, optimised page content, headings and titles, and connected the website to a suite of Google tools like Search Console and Google Analytics.

Training and Marketing Strategy

Just before launching the new website, I ran Dani through the backend of the website. This training session showed Dani how she can easily manage her website going forward – duplicating pages, editing page content, adding new products and more.

Upon the completion of the project, we sat down for a marketing brainstorming session to help with content creation and SEO strategy. I provided Dani with the council on some ways she can find more wholesalers and answered a variety of questions to set her off on the right path – ready to publish her second book “Sydney the Sloth”.

The Result – A Professional Author Website

The new publisher and author website is beautifully designed while not forgetting SEO and lead generation optimisation, ready to assist Dani with her passion as a children’s author.

Dani saw several benefits, including a more user-friendly website, a greater ability to connect with potential customers, and a more efficient way of handling orders and payments.

In addition, the advanced discount system and shipping solutions I implemented helped to further improve the efficiency of the website.

Dannielle was so happy with the results that she decided to use my services for two other projects!

“Kreete is a website designer who I trust implicitly.
